How this calculator works

An emergency fund is cash set aside to cover essential expenses if income stops. The target is a simple multiple of what you must spend each month:

Target = essential monthly expenses * months of runway.

The calculator also shows a one-month starter fund and the amount to save each month to reach the full target over a chosen number of months:

Monthly saving = target / months to save.

Pick your own expense figure and runway. There is no single correct number for every household.

How to use this calculator

  2. Read the result

The result shows the headline figure and the numbers behind it, so you can see where the cost comes from.

  3. Check the rules before you apply

State caps and licensing decide what a lender may offer you. The state reference lists both with their sources.

Frequently asked questions

How many months of expenses should I save?
That depends on your income stability and obligations. The calculator lets you choose any runway, and it shows a one-month starter fund so you can build toward a larger target in stages.
What counts as an essential expense?
Housing, utilities, food, insurance, transport, and minimum debt payments. Discretionary spending is usually left out, because the fund is meant to cover must-pay costs.
Why show a one-month starter fund?
A single month of expenses is a realistic first milestone. Reaching it first keeps the goal manageable and still covers a short interruption in income.
How is the monthly saving figure calculated?
It divides the full target by the number of months you choose to save. A longer saving period lowers the monthly amount but delays when the fund is complete.
